Causative Expressions using செய் and வை

The auxiliary verbs செய் and வை are used as causative suffixes in Tamil. The causative form of a verb denotes someone making someone else to do something (the verb செய் or வை is attached to) The verb that செய் or வை modifies is put in the infinitive. For example, in the sentence நான் படித்தேன், the action is performed by the agent நான் ‘I.’ In the sentence நான் அவனைப் படிக்கவைத்தேன் ‘I made him study' two actions take place. One is the primary action of ‘reading’ by அவன் (put in the accusative), and the other action is the act of making the person (him) read. Here the agent, நான், is in the nominative. Thus, a verb can become a causative verb by taking the structure Verb-infinitive + வை/செய்.

Even though both செய் and வை occur in spoken Tamil, வை is used more often than செய்.

1a. நீ ஏன் எப்பொழுது பார்த்தாலும் குழந்தையை அழவைத்துக் கொண்டே இருக்கிறாய்

1b. நீ ஏன் குழந்தையை எப்பொழுது பார்த்தாலும் அழச்செய்து கொண்டே இருக்கிறாய் (Less frequently used than 1a).

2a. எல்லோருமாகச் சேர்ந்துகொண்டு ஒரு வழியாக அவனை ஊரை விட்டே ஓடச்செய்துவிட்டோம்.

2b) அப்படி இப்படி என்று கடைசியாக நீங்கள் என்னை உங்கள் வீட்டுக்கு வரவைத்துவிட்டீர்கள்.

3a) நான் நான்கு ஆட்களை வைத்து சுந்தரத்துக்குச் செம்மையாக அடி கொடுக்கச்செய்டேன் (அடி கொடுக்கும் படி செய்டேன் is also ok.) 3b நீங்கள் ஒரு வழியாக நான் அவனை அடிக்கும்படி செய்துவிட்டீர்கள். (அடிக்கவைத்துவிட்டீர்கள்).

When வை is used as an auxiliary verb after an adverbial participle form (AVP), it conveys that the action denoted by the main verb is undertaken for its consequences or uses in the future.

4. எதற்கும் இருக்கட்டும் என்று நான் அவனுக்கு ஒரு நூறு ரூபாய் (லஞ்சம்) கொடுத்துவைத்தேன்.

5. எதற்கும் இருக்கட்டும் என்று உனக்கு இந்தச் செய்தியைச் சும்மா சொல்லிவைக்கிறேன்.
