    Grammar Notes:

    Future Tense for rational subjects - Use of வ், ப்ப், மாட்ட்

    In Tamil, the future tense affirmative, in addition to being used to refer to future events, also has a habitual connotation. Thus the future can be used to refer to events in the present (or at least, where in English the present tense would be used).

    For rational subjects (i.e. non-neuter) the future tense form of a verb in the affirmative is made using the suffixes வ் and ப்ப் followed by the person-number-gender (PNG) suffixes. (Stem-tense-PNG)

    Person-Number-Gender suffixes

      writtenspokenEnglish
      ஏன் ஏன் 1st person
      ஓம்ஓம் 1st pers. plural (inclusive and exclusive)
      ஈர்கள்ஈங்க 2nd pers. polite/unfamiliar
      ஆய் 2nd pers. impolite/familiar
      ஆன்ஆன் 3rd pers. singular masculine
      ஆர்ஆரு 3rd pers. sing. masc. polite
      ஆள் 3rd pers. sing. feminine
      ஆர்கள்ஆங்க 3rd pers. sing. fem. polite OR 3rd pers. plural non-polite

    The suffix வ் is used with weak verbs such as செய், ஓடு, வா, போ etc., and ப்ப் is used with strong verbs like நட, படி, கொடு, கேள் etc.

    Add ப்ப் with strong verbs

      பார் (see) + ப்ப் --> பார்ப்ப் + ஏன் பார்ப்பேன் (I will see.)
      கொடு (give) + ப்ப் --> கொடுப்ப் + ஈர்கள் கொடுப்பீர்கள் (You will give)
      படி (study) + ப்ப் --> படிப்ப் + ஆர்கள் படிப்பார்கள் (They/she will study)

    Add வ் with weak verbs

      உட்கார் (sit) + வ் --> உட்கார்வ் + ஆய் உட்கார்வாய் (you will sit).
      செய் (do/make) + வ் --> செய்வ் + ஆன் செய்வான் (He will do/make).
      பாடு (sing) + வ் --> பாடுவ் + ஆள் பாடுவாள் (She will sing).

    Notice how the following exceptional verbs such as கேள், வா, நில் etc., are conjugated for future tense.

      கேள் (listen, hear) + ப் கேட்ப் + ஆர் கேட்பார் (He will listen).
      நில் (stand) + ப் நிற்ப் + ஏன் நிற்பேன் (I will stand).
      வா (come) + வ் வருவ் + ஆய் வருவாய் (You will come).

    Negation:

    When the subject of a sentence is a human noun, the verb is negated for future tense using the suffix மாட்ட் attached to the infinitive form of the verb. This is followed by respective person, number and gender suffix. (Stem-infinitive-tense negation(மாட்ட்)-PNG).
      படி (study/read) + க்க படிக்க + மாட்ட் + ஆர் படிக்கமாட்டார் (He will not study/read).
      பிற (give birth) + க்க பிர்றக்க + மாட்ட் + ஆர்கள் பிறக்கமாட்டர்கள் (...will not be born).
      மற (forget) + க்க மறக்க + மாட்ட் + ஆய் மறக்கமாட்டாய் (You will not forget).
      பாடு (sing) + அ பாட + மாட்ட் + ஏன் பாடமாட்டேன் (I will not sing).
      பேசு (speak) + அ பேச + மாட்ட் + ஆள் பேசமாட்டாள் (She will not speak).
      போடு (put/serve) + அ போட + மாட்ட் + ஆர் போடமாட்டார் (He will not serve).
      வா (come) + அ வர + மாட்ட் + ஈர்கள் வரமாட்டீர்கள் (You will not come)
      போ (go) + க போக + மாட்ட் + ஆன் போகமாட்டான் (He will not go)
      வில் (sell) + ற்க விற்க + மாட்ட் + ஓம் விற்கமாட்டோம் (We will not sell)

    3) Translate the following to English.

    a) எங்களுக்கு தமிழ் நன்றாக பேச தெரியாது. ஆனால் நாங்கள் ஆங்கிலம் நன்றாக பேசுவோம். நாங்கள் இப்பொழுது பள்ளிக்கூடத்தில் தமிழ் படிக்கிறோம். அடுத்த மாதம் நாங்கள் எங்களுடைய ஊருக்கு போவோம். ஏன் என்றால் அடுத்த மாதம் எங்களுக்கு பள்ளிக்கூடம் இல்லை. நீங்களும் உங்களுடைய வீட்டுக்கு போவீர்களா?

    b) நாளைக்கு நான் உங்களுடைய வீட்டுக்கு வரமாட்டேன். ஏன் என்றால் எனக்கு ஒரு பரிட்சை இருக்கிறது. நான் வீட்டில் படிப்பேன். ஆனால் நான் உங்கள் வீட்டுக்கு வெள்ளிக்கிழமை வருவேன். உங்களுக்கு பரிட்சை இருக்கிறதா? நீங்கள் இன்றைக்கு ராத்திரி எப்பொழுது சாப்பிட போவீர்கள்? என்ன சாப்பிடுவீர்கள்?
    Cultural Notes:

    Where are you heading? (எங்க கெளம்பிட்டீங்க?)

    It is inauspicious and impolite to ask someone எங்கெ போறீங்க or எங்க கெளம்பிட்டீங்க (where are you heading?) when they are going somewhere. If it is important that one should know where the other person is heading, the question should be framed indirectly in such a way that the question doesn't contain the word போ 'go', as in எப்போ திரும்பி வருவீங்க? 'when will you come back?' or திரும்பி வர ரொம்ப நேரம் ஆகுமா? 'will it take too long for you to come back?' and so on. எங்க கெளம்பிக்கிட்டிருக்கீங்க 'are you planning on making a move?' is considered alright, but not எங்க கெளம்பிட்டீங்க 'where are you setting yourself out?'. Similarly, it is not polite to say நான் போறேன் when leaving. Instead, one should say நான் போயிட்டு வறேன் 'I will be back' (lit. I will go and come back').

    This is primarily because Tamil culture relates the idea of 'leaving' from a place with that of 'leaving the world for good' (dying). This is the reason why a Tamil, when leaving, would respond angrily to the question எங்க போறீங்க? 'where are you heading?', perhaps with a statement such as நான் என்ன போய்த்தொலையப் போறேனா, என்ன? 'Am I going to get lost, or what?'

    Make sure no cat is on your way! (பூனெ கீனெ குறுக்கெ வரப்போகுது)

    When Tamils leave the house, they make sure that no cat is on their way, nor a widow or single Brahmin is coming towards them. Such supersitions have no clear reasons, but are believed and passed on by orthodox Tamil Hindus. If, by accident, such events take place when someone leaves home, they return home immediately drink to a cup of water, relax a bit and set out again. This wipes the slate clean so to speak and allows for a fresh start. However, if anything bad happens later or one can't get anything done of what they intended for that day, blame would fall on their bad start. Many Tamils firmly believe that such a bad start always results in some unlucky event, no matter what type of remedies they try to counter it.
