Reportative marker ஆம்
When reporting information that is obtained from a source that the speaker wouldn't want to reveal explicitly, or doesn't want to accept the fact that was revealed, the suffix ஆம் is added to the finite form of the verb or with the predicate noun of any typical noun-noun sentence to express the non-commitment to the fact.
1. முருகன் வாத்தியாராம்
muruhan vaattiyaaraam
It is said/claimed that Murugan is a teacher
Here the implication is that the speaker may or may not want to accept the fact that Murugan is a teacher, but simply reports what he heard someone saying about Murgan. In the following utterances, this suffix is used with finite verbs.
2. நாளைக்கு மழை பெய்யுமாம்
It is believed/reported that there would be a rain tomorrow.
3. போன வாரம் பள்ளிக்கூடத்துக்க் மாணவர்கள் வரவில்லையாம்
It is claimed that no student attened the school last week.
Metaphorical use of the verb கொட்டு
The verb கொட்டு literally means 'pour' or 'drop something', but when used metaphorically it means 'spend lavishly', especially money.
4. சிவாஜி படத்தயாரிப்பாளர்கள் பணத்தைக் கொட்டி இந்தச் சினிமாவை எடுத்திருக்கிறார்கள்.
The Sivaji film productions spent lots and lots of money to make this movie.
அவர் தான் சம்பாதிச்ச பணத்தெயெல்லாம் கொட்டி தன் மகனெ படிக்க வச்சாரம். ஆனால் அவன் சரியா படிக்காம ஊரெச் சுத்திக்கிட்டிருக்கானாம்.
He claims that he spent all the money he earned for his son's education, but the son seems to be roaming around without doing well in his education.
