Manish: Hey! Vikram! Have you seen the movie Anniyan? Sounds like this movie is made with an expense of about twentyfive crores of rupees in an extravagant manner. The director Sankar seems to have done his best by making this movie, unlike any other movie. The fight scenes are filmed superbly. Haven't you seen this movie yet?

Vikram: As soon as the school was over yesterday, I went and watched this movie in the theater. Yes! So much money is spent to make this movie, but there isn't really anything to talk about this movie! There is nothing very interesting to talk about in the story! The hero of this movie doesn't have any clamor at all in his face, although the heroine is okay!

இவன் எப்பவுமே இப்படித்தாண்டா! இவனெ விடக் கொஞ்சம் அழகா இருந்தா போதுமே. இவனுக்குப் பொறுக்காது.

Ya! He is always like this. If anyone is more handsome than him even a little, he can't bear it.

சுரேஷ் – யாருடா கதாநாயகன்? விக்ரமா? நானும் இந்தப் படத்தெ இன்னும் பாக்கவேயில்லெ. நாளைக்குப் பாக்கலாம்னு இருந்தேன். நீ சொல்றத பாத்தா இந்தப் படத்தெப் பார்த்து காசெ வீணாடிக்கவேண்டாம்னு தோணுது.

Suresh: Who is the hero? I haven't seen this movie either. I was planning on watching it tomorrow. From what you say, I now feel like I shouldn't waste my money seeing this movie.

விக்ரம் – அப்படி ஒன்னும் மட்டமான படம் இல்லெ! ஒரு தடவெ பாக்கலாம். நாலு பாட்டு நல்லா இருக்கு. வைரமுத்துப் பாட்டு. ஜெயராஜ் தூள் பண்ணியிருக்காரு. ஒரு தரவெ பாக்கலாம். ஆனா கதெயிலெதான் ஒன்னும் புதுஸா இல்லெ.

Vikram: This is not that bad of a movie. We can watch once! There are four melodious songs, lyrics by Vairamuthu. Jayaraj did really make it so wonderful. We can watch it once! But, there isn't really anything new in the story.

மணீஷ் – சும்மா கதைவிடாதெடா! இயக்குனர் சங்கர் இந்தப் படத்தெ எடுத்துருக்காரு! இசை இயக்குனர் ஆர். ஜெயராஜ்! வேறெ என்ன வேணும்? சும்மா கதை கதைன்னு அலட்டாதெ! இப்ப வற படத்துலெயெல்லாம் கதெ எங்க இருக்கு!

Manish - Don't just make up stories! The direcctor Sankar directed this movie! The music director is R. Jayaraj. What else you would need? Don't just making it a big deal about the soreyline! In which movie these days have a good storyline?

நாலு பாட்டு நல்லா இருக்கு கதாநாயகி மொகம் பாக்றதுக்குப் பரவாயில்லெ!

There are four songs which are very melodious! Heroine has a handsome look!

வேற என்ன வேணும்?

What else is needed?

சங்கர் படம்ணாலே ப்ரமாதமாதாண்டா இருக்கும். பரிட்செ எப்ப முடியும்ணு காத்துக்கிட்டிருக்கேன்! பரிட்செ முடிஞ்சுதோ இல்லயோ இந்தப் படத்தெ முதல் வேலெயா பாத்துட்டுதான் மறு வேலெ.

Sankar's movies are always excellent. I am waiting for the exam to be over. As soon as the exam is over, I will watch this movie as my first priority.

சரி வா போலாம். நேரம் ஆகுது.

Ok! Let's go! It's getting late.

    Grammar Notes:

    Reportative marker ஆம்

When reporting information that is obtained from a source that the speaker wouldn't want to reveal explicitly, or doesn't want to accept the fact that was revealed, the suffix ஆம் is added to the finite form of the verb or with the predicate noun of any typical noun-noun sentence to express the non-commitment to the fact.

    1. முருகன் வாத்தியாராம்
    muruhan vaattiyaaraam
It is said/claimed that Murugan is a teacher

Here the implication is that the speaker may or may not want to accept the fact that Murugan is a teacher, but simply reports what he heard someone saying about Murgan. In the following utterances, this suffix is used with finite verbs.

    2. நாளைக்கு மழை பெய்யுமாம்
It is believed/reported that there would be a rain tomorrow.

    3. போன வாரம் பள்ளிக்கூடத்துக்க் மாணவர்கள் வரவில்லையாம்
It is claimed that no student attened the school last week.

Metaphorical use of the verb கொட்டு

The verb கொட்டு literally means 'pour' or 'drop something', but when used metaphorically it means 'spend lavishly', especially money.

    4. சிவாஜி படத்தயாரிப்பாளர்கள் பணத்தைக் கொட்டி இந்தச் சினிமாவை எடுத்திருக்கிறார்கள்.

The Sivaji film productions spent lots and lots of money to make this movie.

    அவர் தான் சம்பாதிச்ச பணத்தெயெல்லாம் கொட்டி தன் மகனெ படிக்க வச்சாரம். ஆனால் அவன் சரியா படிக்காம ஊரெச் சுத்திக்கிட்டிருக்கானாம்.

He claims that he spent all the money he earned for his son's education, but the son seems to be roaming around without doing well in his education.
